The MBPJ Civic Centre in Jalan Yong Shook Lin has long stood as one of Petaling Jaya’s most recognizable civic and cultural venues. Since its establishment in the late 1970s, the centre has played a vital role in hosting community events, performances, exhibitions, and official functions.
Over the decades, however, evolving performance standards and modern audience expectations have necessitated a comprehensive upgrade particularly within its auditorium facilities.
The Auditorium and Banquet Hall expected to reopen by July or August 2026. Refurbishment includes installing new seating, replacing carpets, improving the sound system, acoustic panels and upgrading rigging system to enhance performance quality.
Elevating Performance Standards
The auditorium within the MBPJ Civic Centre has traditionally served as a multi-purpose venue, accommodating everything from theatrical productions and musical performances to corporate and community events. However, as performance technologies advance, older venues often face limitations in rigging systems, stage flexibility, and curtain mechanisms.
The key upgrading work include installing new seating, replacing carpets, and upgrading the auditorium's acoustics and sound systems and rigging system.
The stage rigging system has been installed more than 15 years ago and it is time for the refurbishment and upgrading work.
The recent upgrades address these challenges by introducing modern stage infrastructure designed to meet contemporary production requirements. Improved rigging systems enhance load capacity, safety, and operational efficiency, allowing for more complex stage setups and dynamic performances. At the same time, upgraded stage curtain systems contribute not only to aesthetics but also to acoustics, light control, and overall stage management.
Rigging and Stage Curtain Upgrade
One of the upgrading work part for stage lighting and sound system is to replace the aging motorized rigging system and stage curtain to newer system. Artistic Controls work as specialist contractor under the main contractor to provide rigging and stage curtain upgrade.
The rigging system upgrade involves the replacing of the counter weight motorised system to fully motorised installation of advanced mechanisms that allow for smoother and safer operation of stage equipment, including lighting bars, scenery, and suspended elements. This enhances both technical flexibility and operational reliability essential for hosting high-quality productions.
Equally important is the stage curtain upgrade. Modern curtain systems are engineered to provide better flame retardancy, durability, and acoustic performance, while also improving the visual impact of stage presentations. With Artistic Controls’ expertise, the auditorium is now better equipped to support a wide range of performances, from theatrical shows to formal ceremonies.
Supporting Community and Cultural Growth
The revitalization of the MBPJ Civic Centre Auditorium reflects a larger commitment by MBPJ to invest in community infrastructure. As Petaling Jaya continues to grow, the demand for high-quality event spaces is increasing—not only for entertainment but also for cultural development and civic engagement.
By upgrading the auditorium, MBPJ is reinforcing its role as a hub for arts, culture, and community interaction. The improved facility will provide local artists, organizations, and event organizers with a modern platform to showcase their work, fostering a vibrant cultural scene.
